Day before Thanksgiving (US) shopping for the playa

 Wednesday November 24, 2021

Today we set out from La Paz for Playa Tecolote or Owl Beach with a grocery and gas stop along the way. The Soriana supermercado was huge. It is a Baja Sur type big Walmart but with a much better grocery selection.

Christmas was already in full swing in the store  with all our familiar Christmas carols, jingle bells and frosty the snowman music.

I am not sure how the people of Baja Sur relate to those songs but they must signify Christmas, at least to the store operators. Everywhere in Baja Sur the decorating has begun. They were putting in poinsettias along the malecon yesterday in Las Paz. The larger garlands were being hung across the streets. There is no Thanksgiving holiday so in Baja Sur they move straight from Dia de Los Muertos to Christmas.

This drive was a much shorter one than yesterday, only 45 km or 29 miles. We basically skirted Las Paz to get to Tecolote. Once again we were able to park our rigs on the packed sand just about 25 feet from the water.

In the foreground are Kurt and Diane and behind Ruth and Euclid, from Vancouver, BC. They have the most beautiful tans from this Baja trip.

Everyone broke out the beach chairs and we were set up by 11:00 am or so. Tucker, Pipi and Cleo our dog family ran in big crazy circles chasing each other and dog smiling with tongues hanging out. They would rest and then resume their happy chases up and down the beach and around the trailers. The last few stops since Santispec Playa we have had them stay in the trailers and RV’s while we did tours. Their little faces told us that depression was a possibility if they did not get some days of beach freedom.

Jim tried to organize a group cook to get us altogether but we ended up with just us Californios, Greg and Ann, Kristina and Paul and Judy and Jim doing a group cook of shrimp, salmon from Alaska brought frozen by Kristina and Paul and caught in Alaska by our friend Dick. We then gathered with the rest of our group for a campfire with Jim”s propane campfire in a can at 7:00pm. By the time 8:30 rolled around most of the group had wandered off to bed. We have all noticed how our rising and going to bed has adjusted to the light. Many are up at 5 or 6 in the morning, it darkens at about 6:30, and many are doing evening stuff by 7:30 and asleep by 9:00 if not before. On Tecolote Playa, we have no cell service and, definitely no wifi. For some who brought DVD collections and have enough inverter power from solar or batteries, may watch a movie at night but, for most, it is returning to reading. A habit I know I hope will continue in lieu of TV. I, Judy, am reading a book every couple of days, working my way through a kindle library.

The tide this afternoon was very low. A mom and kids were exploring the tide pools and looking for little creatures. I joined them and found some tiny hermit crabs scuttling through the pools left behind.

Note: 11.30.21

Blogs for our days in between 11.24 and 11.30 written but our data situation is difficult. When we reach La Paz in about 3 days, will be able to post more pictures and the rest of the blog.
